EU Fines Meta €797 Million for Antitrust Violations

The European Commission has fined Meta €797.72 million for abusing its market dominance by tying its Facebook Marketplace platform to the Facebook social network. Regulators said automatically exposing users to Marketplace harmed competition and found that Meta used rivals’ data to favor its own service, creating unfair trading conditions.

According to the Commission, Meta exploited competitors’ information without limits, undermining other online classified ads on Facebook and Instagram and preventing fair competition for other companies in its market. The company has 60 days to comply and is expected to present a solution to separate Marketplace from Facebook. Whatever the remedy, regulators stressed that Meta must give users more “choice.”

Meta said it will appeal, arguing that Facebook Marketplace has evolved since 2021 and now faces strong rivals in countries such as France, the Netherlands and Italy. The Commission, however, maintained that integration with Facebook prevented competitors from gaining traction and effectively sidelined them.
