At least 200 drivers working for ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Bolt staged a protest in Brussels, capital of Belgium, against rising commission fees, mandatory transition to electric vehicles and competition from traditional taxis. Drivers complained that the commission rate, currently 25%, is increasing and reducing profitability. The Belgian Association of Rental Vehicle Drivers (ABCL) called for a two-year delay in the electric vehicle requirement.
Protesters demanded limits on commissions, a guaranteed minimum wage, higher pay for night and holiday shifts, and designated pick-up zones. Traditional taxi drivers also joined in, arguing that ride-hailing platforms create unfair competition.
The drivers marched to the Brussels parliament and Uber’s headquarters to present their demands.
